Letter from Liz

I can’t believe that almost three years have gone by since Arden and I lived in Zimbabwe. Just as I feared would be true, I find it gets easier and easier for me to get caught up in my own life here in Boston, and put off the work we do for Coalition for Courage most days. Looking back at pictures we have taken of the children doesn’t have the same impact on me as living with them side by side. I can only imagine what it must be like for those of you who rely on our newsletters to keep you attached to their joy, pain, and personal stories. It occurred to me the other day how impressive it is that you give so generously to these children after simply reading our pleas.

Recently, I have had several strong reminders of just how much our continued work is needed. First, I was asked to review a wonderful book entitled Our Stories, Our Songs: African Children Talk About AIDS. I cried as I read the familiar stories of children fighting battles I could not even imagine fighting in my own life.

Then, as I wrote a (very belated) 2005 financial report highlighting the work we did throughout the year, I was blown away by how much difference a hundred or so donors can make. Together, we sent nine children to boarding school, three to technical school, and one to the University of Cape Town. WE fed and clothed 150 children during times of desperation and eased the pain of several people who were incredibly sick. Many children who would not have otherwise attended school were able to do so because we purchased the uniforms and supplies that they needed to succeed.

We cannot afford to forget our impact and collective strength!

So, as I sit here on a beautiful spring day, I am heartened by the opportunity to renew my own commitment to the children in Zimbabwe. I am excited that Arden will be visiting them in a few weeks so that she can take new pictures and hear fresh stories for us to savor, and I am proud of all of us for taking the time to be compassionate in the midst of our busy, busy lives.

My deepest gratitude for your continued support,

Liz
